Flow Power Secures Financing for Groundbreaking Battery Energy Storage Project in Victoria

Australian utility Flow Power closes financing on its first BESS project, in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley

Significant Milestone for Flow Power

Flow Power, a prominent player in Australia’s renewable energy sector, has reached a pivotal milestone by closing financing for its inaugural Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project. The Bennetts Creek BESS, located in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley, is poised to deliver a robust 100MW/223MWh capacity, marking a significant step in the region’s transition from coal reliance to sustainable energy solutions.

Project Overview

The Bennetts Creek facility is strategically situated near Hazelwood North, an area historically associated with coal mining and power generation. The project will utilize previously industrial land adjacent to retired coal infrastructure, demonstrating a commitment to repurposing sites for renewable energy development. Financing for this ambitious project has been provided by Westpac and SMBC Australia, with support from OPTrust, a Canadian pension fund.

Benefits of the Bennetts Creek BESS

With its completion scheduled for 2028, the Bennetts Creek BESS will serve multiple key functions:

  • Energy Arbitrage: The facility will store excess renewable energy generated during the day for use during peak evening hours, enhancing grid reliability.
  • Grid Stability: By providing Frequency Control Ancillary Services (FCAS), the BESS will play a crucial role in maintaining the stability of the National Electricity Market (NEM).
  • Community Engagement: Flow Power is committing up to AU$100,000 over five years to support local community initiatives, fostering stakeholder engagement in this transitioning region.

Technological Partnerships

To develop this essential project, Flow Power has partnered with leading firms in the renewable energy sector. Wärtsilä will supply the battery storage equipment and control systems, while Zenviron will manage the balance-of-plant design and construction. These collaborations are pivotal for ensuring the project meets its operational goals and integrates effectively with existing infrastructure.

Implications for the Latrobe Valley and Beyond

The Bennetts Creek BESS is more than just a project; it symbolizes a broader energy transition in the Latrobe Valley. Following the closure of the Hazelwood Power Station in 2017, the region is seeing a shift towards renewable energy projects that leverage existing coal infrastructure. This transition is critical as Victoria aims to lead in battery storage capacity, having recently achieved a significant milestone with over 1GW of simultaneous BESS charging.

Conclusion

As Flow Power moves forward with the Bennetts Creek BESS, the project illustrates the growing momentum of Australia’s renewable energy landscape. By integrating advanced battery storage technology, Flow Power is not only enhancing its operational capabilities but also contributing to a sustainable energy future. The successful financing and impending construction of this facility are encouraging signs for energy stakeholders and community members alike, heralding a new era of green energy in Victoria.
