Neoen, a leading French renewable energy developer, has recently commenced construction of its third major battery project in South Australia, leveraging Tesla’s groundbreaking Megablock technology. Introducing Tesla’s Megablock Technology

The Goyder North Battery, a 226 MW / 866 MWh grid-scale lithium-ion storage system, is set to utilize Tesla’s innovative Megablock technology. This system integrates four Megapack 3 units into a single pre-engineered block, providing 20 MWh of usable AC energy per block. The advantages of this approach include:

  • Faster Installation: Up to 23% quicker installation than traditional setups.
  • Cost Efficiency: Construction costs can be reduced by as much as 40%.
  • Streamlined Operations: Built-in transformers and switchgear simplify the integration process.

This deployment marks the first application of Tesla’s Megablock technology worldwide, underscoring Neoen’s commitment to pioneering advancements in energy storage.

Strengthening Energy Infrastructure

The Goyder North project is strategically significant, supporting power supply contracts for BHP’s Olympic Dam operations while bolstering Neoen’s total capacity in South Australia to over 1.3 GW. The swift construction timeline—less than 90 days—highlights the urgency and scale of Australia’s transition to renewable energy, with 20 GW of utility-scale solar, wind, gas, batteries, and pumped hydro currently in various stages of development across the National Electricity Market.

A Proven Partnership

Neoen’s collaboration with Tesla dates back to the establishment of the Hornsdale Power Reserve in 2017, Australia’s first grid-scale battery. This partnership has consistently pushed the envelope in energy storage technology, introducing features such as grid-forming inverters and inertia services, which enhance grid stability and reliability.

According to Neoen, the Hornsdale facility has successfully delivered over $150 million in market savings, demonstrating the economic benefits of advanced battery technologies.
