Danish renewable energy firm European Energy has secured a significant milestone in the Australian solar landscape by obtaining development approval for its ambitious Upper Calliope Solar Farm. This utility-scale project, boasting an impressive capacity of 1.1 GW, is set to revolutionize the energy supply in central Queensland, particularly in and around the industrial city of Gladstone.

Spanning approximately 2,700 hectares, the Upper Calliope Solar Farm is strategically located about 50 kilometers southwest of Gladstone. This prime positioning not only enhances its operational efficiency but also facilitates seamless integration with existing transmission infrastructure—a critical factor for reliable energy delivery.
Power Purchase Agreement with Rio Tinto
One of the project’s standout features is its 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with global mining giant Rio Tinto. This agreement ensures that 100% of the solar farm’s energy output will be dedicated to powering Rio’s energy-intensive operations in the region, which include aluminium smelting and alumina refining.
