Acciona Energía Launches Major Renewable Initiative With 380 Mw Aldoga Solar Farm in Australia

Acciona Energia completes 380 MW solar project in Australia

Setting New Standards in Renewable Energy

Acciona Energía has officially commenced commercial operations of the Aldoga Solar Farm, a groundbreaking 380 MW photovoltaic (PV) project located near Gladstone, Queensland. This AUD 500 million (approximately USD 332 million) investment is poised to transform the local energy landscape, supplying clean electricity to around 185,000 households annually. The solar farm, which features over 818,000 solar panels, marks a significant milestone in Queensland’s commitment to increasing renewable energy capacity and reducing carbon emissions.

Economic Boost and Job Creation

The construction of the Aldoga Solar Farm has had a remarkable impact on the local economy, generating around 350 jobs during its development phase. Acciona’s investment also facilitated the procurement of approximately AUD 150 million in goods and services from local suppliers, enhancing regional industrial activity. Post-construction, the solar farm will provide up to 15 permanent operational jobs, underscoring Acciona’s commitment to sustainable community development through renewable energy projects.

A Sustainable Power Purchase Agreement

Under a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Stanwell Corporation, the entirety of Aldoga’s renewable energy output will be off-taken and utilized to support Queensland’s decarbonization goals. Stanwell will sell the electricity generated onto the spot market or to commercial and industrial customers, aligning with the state’s strategic objectives for energy transition. This stable revenue stream ensures the project’s financial viability while contributing to the broader energy landscape of Queensland.

Technological Innovations and Environmental Impact

The Aldoga Solar Farm is equipped with advanced solar technologies, including 81 power stations featuring 157 INGECON SUN 3Power C series central PV inverters, representing a first for the Australian market. By incorporating locally sourced materials, such as steel from Orrcon Steel, the project not only enhances energy generation capacity but also strengthens the domestic supply chain for renewable infrastructure.

Environmentally, the solar farm is expected to prevent approximately 930,000 to 934,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year, significantly aiding Queensland’s carbon reduction targets. This project’s integration of innovative solar technology and sustainable practices demonstrates how renewable energy initiatives can drive both economic growth and environmental stewardship.

Strategic Expansion for Acciona Energía

The completion of the Aldoga Solar Farm is a pivotal step in Acciona Energía’s strategy to expand its renewable energy footprint in Australia, where it currently has nearly 2 GW of solar and wind capacity either installed or under construction. In conjunction with the Aldoga project, Acciona is also commissioning the 923 MW MacIntyre Wind Farm, which will be among the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. This commitment to large-scale utility projects is a reflection of Acciona’s dedication to supporting Australia’s low-carbon future while fostering local partnerships and supply chains.

Conclusion: A Model for Future Renewable Projects

The Aldoga Solar Farm stands as a testament to the potential of renewable energy to drive job creation, local economic development, and environmental sustainability. As Queensland continues its transition to cleaner energy sources, projects like Aldoga underscore the importance of innovative partnerships, advanced technology, and community engagement in realizing a sustainable energy future.
