Waaree Energies Achieves a Major Milestone

In a significant advancement for India’s solar energy landscape, Waaree Energies has officially surpassed 20 GW of manufacturing capacity in ALMM-approved solar modules. The company’s latest addition, the Chikhli plant in Gujarat, has been recognized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) as part of its Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). This achievement positions Waaree as the largest solar module manufacturer in India, essential for supporting the country’s ambitious renewable energy targets.

The Importance of ALMM Approval

The ALMM initiative, implemented by the MNRE, is pivotal in promoting domestic manufacturing of solar modules. It ensures that solar products used in government-subsidized projects meet stringent quality and efficiency standards, thereby fostering local supply chains and reducing dependency on imports. Waaree’s inclusion in the ALMM not only highlights its commitment to quality but also strengthens its position in a rapidly evolving market aimed at achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

Waaree’s Chikhli facility contributes 16.444 GW to the company’s total capacity, featuring cutting-edge solar technologies, including TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) and HJT (Heterojunction) modules. These innovations allow for:

  • Higher Efficiency: Modules can achieve efficiencies of up to 22-23%, enhancing their performance in both utility-scale and rooftop applications.
  • Improved Low-Light Performance: TOPCon technology enhances light capture, making solar systems more effective in varying weather conditions.
  • Bifaciality: HJT combines crystalline silicon with thin-film layers, providing better temperature coefficients and greater energy yield.

These advancements are crucial as India adapts to falling module prices and increasing demand for renewable energy solutions.

Impact on the Indian Solar Landscape

The achievement of over 20 GW reinforces India’s push for self-reliance in solar manufacturing, particularly in light of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes and recent import duties on solar equipment. This strategic positioning not only supports the country’s goal of adding 15-20 GW of solar capacity annually but also intensifies competition among manufacturers, driving technological upgrades and improving energy security.
